Week 1 Video
(Click here to see the video)
Over the summer I read an article about Markus Persson, the developer of the popular video game, Minecraft. In the article it stated that Persson had sold his video game company in the last year to Microsoft and amassed a fortune reaching well into the BILLIONS. Using some of the money from the sale of his company, he recently purchased a 23,000 square foot mansion in Beverly Hills for $70 million dollars! Yet despite his recent fortune, in a tweet this past summer, he confessed he wasn’t happy.
Reading through the article, I thought of King Solomon and many of the things he shares in the book of Ecclesiastes.
Life without God is vanity.
Now King Solomon, of anyone, should know the truth of that statement. After all, God blessed Solomon with wisdom and fortune. If money, success, fame and power could bring happiness to one’s life…well the book of Ecclesiastes would read a little differently.
But that’s what I LOVE about this book…it points directly back to the values of our world and claims…it’s all vanity. Anything apart from God is vanity.
And Solomon, the author of Ecclesiastes, should know. He had it all.
Though the book of Ecclesiastes was written thousands of years ago, the wisdom shared in it is relevant today.
After living a life where he denied himself nothing, Solomon writes Ecclesiastes with the hope and purpose to show the next generation that living a life apart from God is meaningless.
All this world has to offer is an empty life.
I can almost hear the sorrow through Solomon’s words as he looks back on his life and declares his heartbreak and disappoint in the choices he made and eternal investments he didn’t.
It’s almost as if he cups our faces in his hands, looks us square in the eyes and says,
“Don’t waste your life! Let me share with you what I’ve learned and spare you the heartache and disappointment I’ve felt over my poor choices…life without God is vanity.”
Though Solomon had it all, choice by choice, day by day, compromise by compromise…over time he drifted away from God. Learning from Solomon’s mistakes, we don’t have to repeat them. Where Solomon sought fulfillment from everything “under the sun”, we can choose to live our lives with an eternal purpose and thus live lives for “what’s above the sun.”
In the book of Ecclesiastes, we are going to read some of Solomon’s “stinkin thinkin.” Because Solomon took his eyes off of God and lived for himself, he regretfully came to the conclusion that chasing after the things of this world: power, position, pleasure and prestige leave one feeling empty. He had all the world had to offer and yet he didn’t have the one thing he wanted most…satisfaction from a life well lived. Because of his choices and living far from God, Solomon became pessimistic and skeptical as he aged. Sadly, he viewed life from the world’s perspective rather than God’s.
But sweet friends, we don’t have to make the same mistakes Solomon did! Ecclesiastes provides us with a wealth of lessons to focus our minds and hearts back on what truly matters…God.
Ohh I’m so excited you are joining us for these next eight weeks as we dig into Ecclesiastes together! What a powerful and timely study this will be!
For those of you who are new to Love God Greatly, this is how our study works:
- We have corresponding Monday-Wednesday-Friday blog posts that will help you gain better insight and application into our daily Scripture reading.
- Everyday we have assigned verses to read for the week and each Monday we provide the weekly reading plan in our Monday blog post! (Along with memory verses and weekly videos) You can also find our full 8 week study reading plan in our journals and for download from our site.
- Reading God’s Word is extremely important, but we like to take it up a notch and actually write the daily Scriptures out in our journals and process what we are reading and learning using the SOAP method. If you are new to this method of studying God’s Word, I highly recommend trying it out! God’s Word will come alive to you like never before as you focus on writing out each word and thus thinking about what the verses mean and how to apply them personally to your life!
- While studying God’s Word solo is great, studying with a group of friends is even better! Feel free to form your own group, join one of ours or just join our growing community of women on our blog, Facebook page or Instagram feed using the hashtag #LoveGodGreatly.
You can join our community of women in these locations:

Beautiful! There is plenty of space to write and the memory verse coloring pages are such a nice touch! – Sarah F.

Welcome from GA! We are so glad that you joined us! We can not wait to hear your testimony of how this study has impacted you and all those around you! Thank you for joining us!
~Terria (LGG Encourager)
I’m excited to be doing this study! Life without God is vanity! The truth is I don’t know how life would be without God. I’ve been in church all my life and accepted Christ when I was 6 years old. My father became an ordained minister of the gospel when I was 15 years old. My commitment to God with my life has waxed and wained over the years. I started these studies several years ago when it was GMGs. I have grown so much from all of the studies I have had the blessing of doing. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m a homeschooling mom of 6 years and often times it’s hard to get to an in person Bible study due to me having my children with me 24/7. I get up before my children every morning and do these studies. That has also changed with the seasons and sometimes I would just do it when I could during the day but it always gets done and I am so blessed for it. Thank you again for allowing God to use you to reach so many women!
By the way I am a GA peach born and raised in south GA. My husband, 4 children, and I reside about an hour from our hometowns. Mom to 12, 10, 7, and an 18 month old. I homeschool them and have since my oldest entered 1st grade.
Your story is also my story with one exception-I am probably twice your age! I can say along with you my sister in Christ -life with God is not vain but a joyful celebration! Thank you, for beautifully sharing your journey!
Jennifer,
Isn’t it amazing how God will meet us exactly where we are, no matter the circumstance! So glad that you are willing to make the sacrifice to embrace God despite the busyness of life! Thank you for joining us. Welcome from Georgia!
~Terria (LGG Encourager)
Hi There! My name is Lena and I am from Alberta, Canada. Your story resonated with me. I too am a homeschool mom with four kids, 9, 7, 4 and 2. We live in the country and our church is tiny with few like-hearted people to study God’s Word with. I truly feel like God led me here and I am so super excited about this study! I get emotional just thinking about God’s goodness to me in this.
Great work. I’m from Nigeria. A young widow with four children, also in ministry I will love to partner with you. More grace WOG.
Hi Ladies…This is probably my 8th study with you guys…I am from Auburndale, Florida…so excited to be here again with this study 🙂
Vicki,
Welcome from Florida! So excited to have you back again!
~Terria (LGG Encourager)
This reminds me of a Shakespeare quote from King Henry VI –
“My Crown is in my heart, not on my head:
Not deck’d with Diamonds, and Indian stones:
Nor to be seen: my Crown is call’d Content,
A Crown it is, that seldom Kings enjoy.”
Peace of mind is worth well more than anything gold can buy.
Carol that’s beautiful! Sheila, LGG Encourager
Ludowici, Ga its about 45 minutes South of Savannah.
Hey there Georgia!!! Glad to have you with us! (Sheila, LGG Encourager)

Hello from Boston, Massachusetts!
Hi from Lancaster, OH! I’m a self employed, 10+ years homeschooling mama to two. I also run a homeschool coop for pre-school through 12th grade as a ministry (and a lot of help from other mamas). Good morning! I’m Misty Watkins-Sloan from Rome, Ga (USA).

I am Karen Clark, from Indianapolis, Indiana – transplanted from Massachusetts last summer….. I have loved the studies from the Word on this site, and have been a part of LGG for over two years now. My walk with God is stronger, and more disciplined – and more intimate because of regular study. Thank you, Angela, for your faithful leadership!

I’m in Olney, MD too! 😀
This is my first study with you all. I am from Abingdon, VA.
Greetings from Austin, TX
A few years ago I joined a bible study at the church I was attending. While I enjoyed the fellowship with the women there I didn’t feel I gained anything out of the studies. So I have been praying for God to show me how to learn about His word. I’ve bought several books on how to study the bible, went to various websites on bible study, but nothing “clicked”. Then a few weeks ago I “stumbled” (LOL…I KNOW that God lead me) on to the LGG site! It has been an answer to my prayers! I’m still playing catch up on the Growing Through Prayer study, but I want to be sure to start this study on time.
The last few years of my life have been almost unbearable. My husband, who is a wonderful, kind, honest and loving man, was forced to resign from his job of 16 years as president of our local bank because of lies and false statements made by another banker from a competing bank. The whole nightmare is so complicated to explain! My husband has had 2 jobs in the last 27 years. He worked for the FDIC and then the bank. The FDIC tried to recruit him back several years ago but he turned them down. Those who tried to recruit him got very angry and said some pretty bad things. The reason I mention that is because they were also involved with my husband being forced to resign. So after 27 years in the banking world my husband was blackballed from the industry he worked in all his professional life. All the investigations done on him have showed that he had done nothing wrong. But it didn’t matter…the damage had already been done! He was unable to find work for over 2 1/2 years! During this time we hired various lawyers, high profile lawyers. Our “case” would be worth tens of millions of dollars. The money would have been nice, but the real issue was to restore my husbands’ reputation! Shortly after my husband stopped working our son, who was 16 at the time, got sick. He was sick for 3 months, losing almost 40lbs! We took him to several specialist and he had multiple procedures done. The conclusion was a bad GI bug that almost completely shut down his digestive system! He was given medicine to stimulate his GI tract and he has since gotten better. Towards the end of my sons’ ordeal I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. But because we had run out of money (between lawyers, medical bills for my son and living expenses) I refused to go to a specialist. Then a series of small set backs kept happening. It got to the point that I was SO angry at God! WHY was this happening to us? Both my husband and I are good people. We believed in God and knew that Jesus was the only way to an eternal life. So why???
I went to visit one of my dearest friends who had been going through her own horrific trials for the past several years. The difference is that she is TRULY a woman of faith! She could tell I was angry with God…she never pushed me or try to “preach” to me, she just listened. On the Sunday I was to return home she asked if I would like to go to church with her. So I did. That 1 hour in church has changed my life! The preacher talke about “lip service”. How many of us “proclaim” Jesus to be the Lord of our lives…but do we really honor Him and TRULLY live a life that shows others that Jesus is the Lord over our lives and that we are dedicated to Him, or is it all “lip service”? Wow….WOW!!! That day I dedicated my life to Christ! It was like the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders!!! On the drive home my heart was so full of joy and peace…I pulled over and cried! The tears were a mixture of happiness, love and joy for the future and tears of sorrow, pain and regret for the past! But oh what a beautiful change came to my heart! Since then our lives have had more trials and hardships! BIG ones! But the relationship that I’m developing with the Lord and with my Savior is growing better and stronger every single day!!!
LGG, thank ya’ll SO very much for the wonderful work you are doing!!!
???
WOWWW!! You have incredibly blessed me. May God shower His Favor over his servants! Isa 60:1 “Arise and Shine for the glory of the Lord rises upon you.” I pray that you may see or atleast glimpse him, every single part of what you are going through; cause He is definitely rising upon you and you are shining as a reflection of his glory on you. Bless you mightily, and I pray that it may be well with you and your family.”

I’m joining y’all from south-central Indiana, I was born and grew up and am still here in Bloomington.

Hi, I am Carla from Michigan. My first study with LGG was Esther in the summer of 2014 and I have not miss one since. This time in God’s word has been a blessing and finding this site was divinely lead. The last two studies I purchased the workbooks and have enjoyed using them, so purchased the one for this study as well. Thank you to all of those at LGG who so faithfully have put these studies together and been such an encouragement through the blog and studies. Continued prayer for each of you, for your families and your ministry.
Just one question, I have been receiving your emails right along but for some reason I did not receive today’s email. Is there something I need to do to get back on your email distribution?
Thanks for these bible studies from Clarksville TN.
Thank you so much for the idea of writing a letter in the MY Response section. I never thought of that but I love that to leave for my children to have now or even review later in life. This will actually be my 3rd study to do with Love God Greatly. I have been debating on whether to start this in my small town, and I know there will be participation, but I just don’t have the confidence I guess you could say, that I be the one to start it. Don’t get me wrong, God is speaking to me, I think it’s just me being afraid. I really feel that I will get there and can start our own group here shortly. Thank you for having these studies. I love them.
Hi, I am Adejoke Akinleye from Abuja, Nigeria
Hi! Deanna from Prior Lake, MN. I did the last study “Growing Through Prayer” and received all of the corresponding emails. I have been receiving all the emails about the upcoming Ecclesiastes study; however today when it started I didn’t get anything. Can someone from LGG tell me why I’m not receiving these emails? It’s not in my spam folder either. Thanks! Really looking forward to the next eight weeks?

I’m already so glad I started this study today. Strangely, Ecclesiates 1 was my reading for my Discipleship reading plan as well. I love how God works, bringing all things together in my life at just the right times! I am really looking forward to growing spiritually as I share in this online study and take it to my ladies at church in our small group! Starting my day with God’s words on vanity and the pursuit of the world already has meant a lot in shaping my day as a parent and person!
Hello!

Kathy Hart from Granite City, IL (metro St. Louis, MO)
Hi ladies! I’m Megan from Alabama. I previously did the “You are Loved” Study right before I got married. Unfortunately since then we’ve struggled with trying to have our first baby through multiple losses and medical issues on my part for the past year and a half. I’ve become so frustrated and have strayed so much from God because I haven’t been able to figure out how to deal with all of the emotions I’ve been going through and I have yet to be able to understand His plan. Fortunately He is so good in so many ways. Just as I was hitting a very low point a few weeks ago with another failed cycle, I stumbled across the Love God Greatly site again and saw this study was about to happen. And ladies it just spoke to me so loud. That this is the place I need to be and what I need to study to rejuvenate my faith as well as to re-build to trust I have lost in God through this difficult time in our lives. So thank you for having me and I am beyond ecstatic to dive in Ecclesiastes with you all!
I am from Indianapolis, IN but am currently living with my awes to husband and 3 kids in Covington, KY. I have really enjoyed these studies…this is probably my 4th or 5th one. It really works well since I have 2 young ones not in school yet! Thank you!
That should have said “awesome” husband!
Deb from Mesa, AZ, in the winter and Iowa in the summer–sometimes from Denmark or France depending on where my missionary children have migrated.
This is my third LGG study; I’m super thankful for LGG and to the Lord for leading me here/inspiring the ladies who began and continue the work. PTL!
As I read through the comments above, I was struck by the ones from Carol and Carole. Carol quoted Shakespeare–gotta love it! Thank you, Carol, for bringing a wonderfully literate perspective to my study today! Carole shared her difficult story–a husband’s lost career, a sick son, and a diagnosis of MS for herself. Carole! Praise God you stumbled your way through, talked with your friend, and recommitted your life to the Lord and landed here! It’s a great place to be.
Abba, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, this day I ask you to pour out blessing on the women of LGG–both leaders and students. I pray especially for my group leader, VB, who is sacrificing much to continue shepherding our online flock. Holy Spirit, as we study these words of “the Preacher,” help truly HEAR Your voice and follow hard after You. Praise Your Holy Name! I ask these things in the Name above all names, Jesus.
Hi ladies! I’m Tammie from Southern Illinois. I like many have struggled with studying the bible and truly putting God first. This year I made the commitment to do so. This is one of the steps I am taking to make that happen. I am looking forward to this journey with you all! Bless you all!
Oh how wonderful! Love God Greatly is a great ministry to establish a good study foundation. Here you have accountability and flexibility and if you slip up a day or so you just jump back in. This is going to be a beautiful journey for you! Sheila, LGG Encourager

Janet Senatore, originally from Covina, CA, now in San Angelo, TX
I’m doing this study from Boston, Massachusetts! This is my third study through LGG, and this time I have the privilege of doing the study with my mother-in-law and friend. My prayer is to have more of my family members and friends join me in the next LGG study.
Greetings to you !
I’m Mia a Minnesota girl now living in Maine for the last 5 years. Looking forward to this study to help me gain a new perspective on how to keep my focus on God’s way rather then what the world or the media tells us. I think this study is so important as we seek the LORD as we ask Him who the next President of the United States should be. He knows each one– God knows their hearts, their minds and He will show us who He can use to turn our country back to Him . May each of us no matter where we are in the world embrace God’s truth and promises .
Hello from Monterey California! This is my first online study, and I am excited to see what God has planned.

I’m lauren from Indianapolis , IN! I’m looking forward to another amazing Bible study to deepen my walk with God! I am praying that I will be able to live out to others how much we need God to find meaning in life. I do early intervention therapy with babies and toddlers and get a great chance to become a part of the families lives. Leaves great opportunity for ministry! Three families I work with are hurting so much and are proclaimed atheists. I want to be able to live out the hope Jesus gives in such a way that it makes them want it. One mom has already softened! Praying for open doors and softened hearts!
Lauren,
Welcome from Indiana! Praying along with you that everyone will know the reason for the hope that lives within us!
Good morning from Harrison, AR. Ecclesiastics is a book that can show us how easily it is to take our lives off God and put them on the world. This is going to be a great study. Thank you to all the leaders for all the work you do to bring us these studies.
Sharon,
Welcome from Arkansas! I agree that this will be a great study!

Hello from Onida, South Dakota.
Good Morning from New Braunfels, Texas! I am excited to study Ecclesiastes – a book which my dad and I had many discussions on the meanings and who wrote it!
This is my 9th study with Love God Greatly!!!
Good Morning from Indianola, Washington. Although I have followed LGG for some time now this is the first study in which I have purchased the book and I am looking forward to hearing from the Lord in this time of reflection on the purpose of life.
I was first introduced to the Love God Greatly series when attending the ladies Bible studies at Victory Baptist Church in Shepherdsville, Ky. Great bunch of godly women that I miss greatly since moving away. I now reside in Luverne, Alabama but get the series still. Uplifting, encouraging and real. Praise the Lord for women who work diligently to spread the Word of God and keep focus where it should be, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you! I shared with a co-worker in Pueblo, Colorado while there and another in Mobile, AL while working there. I believe one of our commisions from the Lord was, GO and TELL! I will keep trying. God bless.
Good morning! I’m Joy from Greenfield, Ohio. Your studies have blessed me so much. I cannot tell you how many I have done. I do love the new journals with the coloring pages. It helps keep me accountable. Thank you so much for all you do!

Looking forward to learning more about my Lord each day. God’s blessings on you. Thank you for your hard work and seeking God’s guidance. I’m finishing up “Growing through Prayer.” So much to soak up. Loving my time with Him. Started the study in Ecclesiastes yesterday afternoon. Again thank you.

Hey y’all. ..Loree here from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of eastern Tennessee. ..Been taking Kay Arthur precept upon precept classes…Found y’all this evening. …
This is my first study here. I grew up in a Christian home, so I’m no stranger to the Word of God. But sometimes life has a way of messing things up. Let’s just say many years and several bad choices and mistakes later I found myself at a crossroads in life. I had left an abusive husband with just my children, my dogs, and a few of my belongings and started a new life. Unfortunately, my church and my Christian friends didn’t approve of my decisions and turned their backs on me. I know that God didn’t, but that hurt and abandoned in my time of need was too much for me to process. So I pushed God out. The only friend who stuck with me was a Christian friend whose wife of 25 years had recently him and their 4 kids for a man 20 years younger. Out of that friendship, a loving relationship was born. But, both of us had been so hurt by our church and friends that we closed ourselves off to God and lived our lives OUR way. Recently though, I have noticed in myself a longing for God and a longing for this man that I love to be the man that God wants him to be….for us to be what God wants us to be together. So I began to stumble through some prayers, only half believing God could even hear me. A few weeks later, my boyfriend blindsided me with the very blunt question “do you think we ate living our lives the right way?” So we’ve made some changes until we can get married and do things the right way. It isn’t easy, but it’s right and it feels good to know we are right where we belong. Part of the changes is daily devotions and bible studies of our own. This is mine. My name is Sara and I live in Rockford, IL.
Hello, I am from Ponchatoula, LA. I look forward to doing the bible studies with LGG and looking forward to growing in Christ.
Hey! I’m coming from Baltimore, MD! Hoping that this study will help me with my growth in regards to my relationship with God and how I view life! Just keep me in prayer!
My name is Jennifer Ornelas, a single mom from from Buena Park, California. I have been suffering severe depression since I was a child. Diagnosed by several professional since about age 28. I believe God has been chasing me since a young age but I was only taught fear of God not the love. I grew up in a domestic violent home, alcohol and drugs played a major part with both parents. I watched my Dad beat my mom on numerous occasions as a child. However I do not place blame on them for my behavior. I have compassion and try to understand why we behave the way we do. I use to be very angry however, but last night I surrendered to the Lord and immediately he removed my blinders and filled me with knowledge. I have been an Addict of pain meds for almost 10yrs, and gave my life to the Lord almost 5yrs ago but when going got rough, I ran the other way. I thought of God every single day, many times a day since him. Honestly I think I have thought of God many days of my life, more than not. I was fearful of failing him again. Currently I am on a heavy opiate blocker similar to Methadone and medical marijuana. God knows my heart and knows I wish to be free of any medications if that is his will, which I believe it is. I was so angry at God I threw out my bibles so immediately I downloaded different apps, yours being one. I know he will speak to me through all of you and his word. Thank you for doing what you do.

Hi! I am excited about this Bible Study and hope that it helps get me closer to being able to walk a Christian life.
Good morning, I am Dayana from Miami, Florida! This is my first study with love God greatly! Super excited to learn.
Hi LGG, this is my first bible study with you guys.
I am from Indonesia.
I was reading the Ecclesiastes one day and I instantly fell in love with it. So started to browse to find a bible study on it and here I am…
I am so thankful that GOD has lead me to LGG.
Today is my first day on Ecclesiastes 🙂 and I can`t wait for me and my family to be transformed by GOD`s word.
God bless you all
Hi Dayana
nice to meet you. This is my first day on LGG and Ecclesiastes.
Many love from Indonesia
Good night, from the Cayman Islands
Ahem, god IS the epitome of vanity, wth is being misinformed here? If he demands so much love for himself, if thats not vanity, I dont know what is. His love is unconditional ONLY if you believe and worship him, not that I got unconditional love even though I worshipped and believed in him. Here’s my story: I was unable to keep a vow (a harmless one) and he damns me for the duration of my belief in him (repenting time after time after time), yet murders, rape, killings (place sin here)are happening everyday yet he can do nothing about it? In my experience it seems like god is truly very weak and can only prey on the weak(er). The strong don’t care nor can god do anything about it, god just seems so………incapable, all bark and no bite. I lost all hope in god, just hope he can display the strength and power he so proudly claims to have, cause so far the people who are keeping this world safe are humans and laws, not god.
