Psalm 94:14 says, “Certainly the Lᴏʀᴅ does not forsake his people.” Other translations say He won’t reject His people, won’t cast them off, or won’t walk away.

I love how Charles Spurgeon, an acclaimed English preacher from the 1800s, put it: “‘The Lord will not cast off his people.’ Lay hold of that precious assurance. Even if Satan should come, and whisper to you, ‘The Lord has cast thee off,’ do not believe it; it cannot be. The devil has his cast-offs, but God has no cast-offs. Sometimes he takes the devil’s castaways, and makes them to be the trophies of his mighty grace; and when he has done so, they are his people.”

This should be a huge comfort to all believers. Nothing you can do will separate you from the love of God. (Whatever popped into your head, no, not even that.)

The fact that God will not leave us is repeated throughout Scripture, but honestly, it’s hard to fully grasp because so many things in our world are temporal or change based on circumstances. I think of the ways we get rid of things—we give away, sell, trash, pawn—and why we get rid of things—maybe we consider them useless, old, broken, ugly. And then I think of the ways we effectively get rid of people—divorce, rejection, separation, abandonment—and why we end relationships—maybe we consider them toxic, unpleasant, unworthy, or unfaithful.

The truth is, God could call each of us so many of those things. He could justify turning His back on us. But He doesn’t leave us, and He won’t. Even if we walk away from the faith, God is waiting to welcome us back.

Amazing grace. Blessed assurance. You are deeply loved, and you are not alone.
