The law of the Lord is perfect

and preserves one’s life.

The rules set down by the Lord are reliable

and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.

The Lord’s precepts are fair

and make one joyful.

The Lord’s commands are pure

and give insight for life.

The commands to fear the Lord are right

and endure forever.

The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy

and absolutely just.

Psalm 19:7-9

As we draw near to God, He promises to draw near to us. His Word is perfect, true, reliable, and fair. Let’s continue to seek Him as we begin another week of learning to study the Bible.

Today, we’re going to do more observation. I know it seems tedious to spend so much time on observation. The more time we spend observing the passage, the more accurate our interpretation and application will be. Let’s continue to take our time in this step, learning valuable tools that will help us with effective Bible study.

Today, as you observe Psalm 19:7-9, circle all of the adjectives used to describe God’s Word. Make a list of these words.

Next, underline all of the descriptions of what God’s Word does. Make another list of these words and phrases.

  • What do you notice about these words and phrases?
  • Are the connotations of these words positive or negative?
  • What do these words mean in your current context?

Take a moment to find a definition of every adjective you wrote down that describes God’s Word.

Next, find a definition of each verb that tells us what God’s Word does.

What is consistent between all of these definitions? What is different?

We’re not working through interpretation and application yet, but today, take what you’ve learned about God’s Word and come up with a short description, in your own words, of the qualities and characteristics of God’s Word.

Praise God today for His Word!

Week 3 Challenge: This week, focus on a passage of Scripture that is difficult for you to understand. Spend time each day reading and praying through the passage. Why is it difficult to understand? What does it communicate about God’s character? Ask God to help you see His holiness as you study the passage.
