The book of Esther has always been a favorite of mine. When I was young, I loved having a female Bible character I could look up to, but as the years have passed, I love the story because it clearly displays God’s love and protection for His people.

We’re nearing the end of our study of Esther, and this is exactly what we see in the Esther 9:11-22. Esther has successfully protected her people, and now the time has come for the king to put Haman to shame for his deceitful plot to kill the Jews, God’s chosen people.

Justice is served. The Jews are protected. And in response to their protection and freedom, they create a holiday called Purim to remember and celebrate the goodness of God’s protection, because the act of remembering is a powerful tool in a believer’s life.

Take a look at Psalm 71:24 –  “And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long, for they have been put to shame and disappointed who sought to do me hurt.”

This is exactly what the Jews were doing in Esther when they celebrated Purim! They were setting a time and date to remember the righteousness and goodness of God, because He put to shame those who sought to destroy them. We see this same thing happen in Joshua 4, when the Israelites were finally able to enter the Promised Land. They laid down stones to remember and teach the generations to come who their Great God was. And, just like the Israelites in Joshua and the Jews in Esther, we see the call to remember and proclaim God’s goodness throughout the pages of Scripture (1 Chronicles 16:12-15, Isaiah 46:8-9, 2 Peter 3:1-2).

Because the act of remembering is a powerful tool in a believer’s life.

Have you ever found yourself in a season where all hope seems to be lost? Maybe your health, job, or relationships were threatened by the brokenness of this world. But God, being rich in mercy and steadfast love, stepped in and redeemed the situation. Just like He did for the Jews in Esther, He turned your sorrow into joy and your mourning into celebration.

Remembering God’s provision for our lives points us to His ultimate provision for us in Jesus Christ, but it also helps us survive the future storms to come.

Because we’ve seen Him move mountains in our lives before, we remember His protection and it allows us to trust Him in all seasons. And not only that, but it helps us pass on stories of His goodness to our friends and family when their own hardships come. Remembering God’s protection is a way of pointing to our salvation, even in the most difficult of situations.

So, where have you seen God’s protection and deep love brightly displayed in your life? Where has He moved mountains, and turned sorrow into joy? How can you set aside time to remember and proclaim the righteousness of God today?

Our God is faithful and true. So just like the Jews in the book of Esther, let us speak of His righteousness today for He has put to shame our ultimate enemy, Satan himself, through the work of Jesus Christ.
