Every few months I find myself tempted to delete all of my social media accounts. The negative energy overwhelms me. Facebook starts to suck my joy away, and  I grow tired of scrolling through superficial Instagram selfies and beat myself up for not having a Pinterest perfect life. Social media can be a breeding ground for dissatisfaction. People inappropriately “overshare” intimate details of their personal lives, and brutal wars are waged by friends with differing political ideologies. Why can’t we just all get along?

I want to return to the quiet days of reading a book and listening to music.

But, before I hit the delete button on my social media life, God sends me a reminder. He whispers quietly to my heart, “My daughter, you are called to be a light in a dark place.”

Those broken people on social media are hurting, and I have a sure hope in Jesus to share with them. I can use my Facebook feed to connect with people who have serious questions about life and faith.  I can communicate foundational truths from Scripture and offer hope and healing to a lost soul.

Now, instead of wasting time on social media, I log on purposefully to speak life.

Friends, Jesus is the Word made flesh. His mighty name is life and peace even on Instagram. He speaks and the storm of negative words in our newsfeed must obey. The Lord wants to bring redemption through us on social media.

Let’s pause and pray before we post so that we use our words wisely:

  • to point to Jesus with profitable, encouraging talk.

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” – Ephesians 4:29

  • to promote peace through grace-filled responses and humble hearts.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” – Colossians 3:12-14

  • to praise the good in others and share God’s love in a world filled with hate.

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” – Colossians 4:5-6

  • to proclaim the compelling message of salvation in Christ with anyone willing to listen.

“In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” – 1 Peter 3:15

You are called to let your light shine on social media. Your next post could set someone free from doubt and fear and offer a firm place to stand in Christ.
