“But these are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” –John 20:31

Friend, I am always in awe of God’s thoughtfulness and love for humankind by sending Jesus and inspiring His people to write the Bible. Without Jesus and the Bible, how would you and I have come to know God? Without these words documented for us in advance, before we were born, how would we have come to know Jesus and believe in Him? How would we even have life, not just existence, but a promise of life with Him in eternity?

God’s love for us is amazing, and the words in the Bible are one of the most tangible revelations of that love for me. If I am asked today, “What can you hold as a tangible representation of God’s love for you?” I would pick up my Bible. The words in the Bible show me, without a doubt, that God is mindful of me and doesn’t want me to die in sin and darkness but to spend eternity with Him. How do I get that?

In this verse we see the purpose of the Bible, who Jesus is, and why God sent Him.

John’s Gospel was recorded so that we might believe that Jesus is unequivocally the Son of God. The Bible was recorded so we can know Christ, not just in head knowledge, but to believe and experience Him with our whole being, and have the eternal life that comes with that belief.

When we believe in Jesus we have life in His name.

When sin came into the world, it destroyed humanity’s relationship with God and caused spiritual death. It brought death and condemnation. But that was not the life God wanted for us. He wanted us to continually live in love and relationship with Him. He created us in His image. To rectify that, He sent His Son to die for us, thereby rebuilding the bridge to Himself and life that sin destroyed. Humans strived to be right with God in the past, before Christ came, but always failed. Our actions brought death. We needed help, we needed life. We were tired of striving, always falling short of God’s glory and standards. The life we need is found and can be found only in believing in Jesus.

To know and to believe in a person are two different things. When you know a person, you are aware of who they are. That does not mean you believe they are of any benefit to you or that you can trust them. But when you believe in a person, you are saying, “I trust this person.”

But, how would you and I know about Jesus, and believe that He is the Son of God and that His life here on earth resulted in His death and resurrection that brought salvation to all humankind? After all, we did not live in biblical times. God inspired people to pen down these words so that you and I and anyone who reads them will come in contact with the person of Jesus, read about His life and God’s intentions for us, and will believe and have life. The life God always wanted us to have in Him and with Him. That is how we believe; by the words in the Bible. No wonder Jesus said in John 6:33

“The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”

The words of this book point to One person, Jesus, showing us through various undeniable claims, words, and miraculous signs that Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to eternal life. We have eternal life by believing He is the Son of God and that He was sent by God into the world to die for us.

Are you tired of the life you have and want to have a new life that promises eternal life with God?

Are you already a believer and want to continue walking and growing in your relationship with God?

Open your Bible and read and study to know more about God so that we can keep believing in Him, have life, know how to live here on earth, and to spend eternity with God when He calls us home.
