I think we can all agree that the last many months have been chaotic and unsettling. I’ve found myself paralyzed and consumed by endless news on the coronavirus, social injustice and unrest, and politics. My kids asked if a zombie apocalypse was coming. No. (I mean, I hope not! But, it’s 2020, so who knows?!)

Today’s verses from Hebrews 4 are some of my very favorite, and they recenter me in the midst of the craziness.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Jesus understands the depth of our humanity.

Whatever it is that binds you, Jesus has been tempted by it or felt it. Our struggles don’t surprise Him.

Big hurts, fears, failings? Lump them at His feet.

Questions, prayers, hopes? Bring those, too.

Jesus is a compassionate high priest for us.

He doesn’t respond to us with impatience, disgust, or disdain. He understands us, and He is our advocate.

We are encouraged to approach the throne of God. (Just envisioning this starts the Hillsong lyrics in my head, “Who am I that the highest king would welcome me?”) It’s hard for me to grasp that I am welcome in the same room, much less to enter boldly.

Friends, as the whole world shakes and threatens to crumble, our God remains unchanged. As these days have left me speechless, let’s pray Scripture as it’s written in Hebrews 4:16

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
