When she was four, funny, and anything but fragile, my youngest got her first hearing aid. It had been a long time coming, and let me tell you… we were all about as giddy as it gets.

Funny how hearing makes you realize just how much you’ve been missing.

I remember those early days of awe like they were yesterday. Immediately after she woke each morning, she would beg me to put her hearing aid in. She quickly learned the provision and joy of that thing, and happily accepted that trying to hear on her own would be in vain. She began turning to me the first time I called her name. She started singing along instead of asking me over and over to turn up the music. She gasped with excitement at the breakfast table when her brother’s voice came in loud and clear. We could actually read through an entire book without her saying, “Huh?”  Thoroughly impressed, she would stop me mid-sentence – several times throughout the day – just to say, “Mom, I… JUST… HEARD… THAT!”  Her life began to take on greater intention and wonder, and she learned to not take one clear sound for granted.

Oh, sweet girl.

She was born with a deficiency but she’s not held back, because she’s connected to the source of help that she needs.

As we dove into this new chapter of our lives, I learned a whole lot about the amazing technology that accompanies such a tiny device. Tess’s hearing aid comes with a microphone and microchips that translate and “sort” sounds by priority. Using a processor programmed to her personalized settings, sound is divided into different parts – for example, human voices are distinguished from varying levels of background noise. Because Tess’s hearing is prioritized to hear the person in front of her, the speaker’s voice is then amplified while the distracting background noise is lessened. Pretty amazing stuff.

“And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” – Isaiah 58:11

Much like my girl needs to program her hearing, if we’re going to hear God, we need to prioritize His voice.

I wake up each morning and recognize my need to plug into the Source of Life – Jesus. I’ve experienced the provision and joy of knowing Him, and admit that I am nothing without Him. He calls me by name and I turn to Him – finding comfort in knowing that I am His child. I can sing songs of praise, confident that my Redeemer lives. I’m overwhelmed with excitement because His voice comes in loud and clear through His Word. I’ve even caught myself stopping mid-sentence, overwhelmed by His love and the fact that, “GOD… JUST… DID… THAT.”  I‘ve learned that when I prioritize Jesus as my Guide, only then is the background noise of this world hushed so that I can clearly hear the voice of my Savior.

God has promised to guide us…

By His sovereign hand.

Through His Word.

By His Spirit.

Through the wise and godly counsel of others.

Because sin entered the world, all of human race has a deficiency. But because of Jesus, praise God we don’t have to be held back, separated from God any longer!

He still saves.

He still speaks.

He has not left us on our own to wander.

He is not a far off God.

Are you connected to the Source?

Funny how hearing makes you realize just how much you’ve been missing.

At His feet,

*Let’s talk: Where do you need to turn from the noise of this world so that you can tune in to His voice today?

Week 2 Challenge: Choose one thing to “turn off” this week (examples: simplify your schedule, fast from electronics/social media, reject the lies of the enemy) so that you can more clearly tune in to God as your Guide.
