God Is Near To The Brokenhearted
“Help me, Lord”
“Please God, no”
“Why, God, why?”
Most of my prayers have been three words or less…the short, gut-wrenching, pleading prayers of heartache. No matter the size, those simple prayers have been enough for the God of the Universe to rise from His heavenly throne and descend into the depths of my heart to nurture and comfort me. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. When we are at our weakest, God is our strength to begin anew. When we are at our lowest, God gives hope to rise again. When we are at our saddest, God knits our hearts back together moment by moment.
Our first inclination may be to ask why, but “why” is often the wrong question. Our finite minds will never understand the mind or will of God. His purpose in our heartache transcends our level of understanding. Even if we knew the ‘why’, in the midst of grief, the answer would likely be of little comfort. When faced with death, betrayal, assault, heartbreak, or hatred, the knowledge of ‘why’ does little to console or satisfy.
The better question is ‘how’. How will I get through this, Lord? How will I laugh and experience joy again? How can I trust again? How do You make all things new? The answers come as we pour out our hearts unrestrained to God in prayer. We surrender all of our questions, our doubts, our pain, and our tears trusting that He hears us and He cares. Because He is God, He can handle our hard questions. God meets us right where we are. He longs to hear from us when we feel like giving up. When our pain is the deepest and our doubt the greatest, God remains with us.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
In the midst of my heartache, prayer was the last thing I wanted to do. I believed the lie that God was distant, detached, and very far from me. The truth is that I had separated and isolated myself from Him. Those dark times are when I really struggled. Pain exposed my weakness and lack of control over all of the uncertain circumstances of my life. In the midst of my pain is when I needed God the most. God was waiting patiently for me to surrender, step out in faith, and lean in utter dependence on Him. We must pray most desperately in those times when it seems the most difficult.
When we step out in faith and seek God in our heartache, He reveals to us His sovereignty. As we speak to God, He reminds us of the physical, spiritual, and emotional anguish that His son Jesus endured for us. As we pray to God, we find Him reassuring us of these truths in His Word. No pain we endure is wasted. Every tear is salvaged and stored. Our heartache is never in vain or without purpose. God promises that all pain, heartache, and mourning will end. There is great hope ahead for God’s people. God doesn’t just strengthen and love us only on our good days. When we are having our worst days, God reminds us that His mighty hand which laid the foundations of this earth is the same hand that wipes our tears, embraces us, lifts us, and upholds us. Our Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those with a crushed spirit.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Let’s talk: How has God drawn you deeper to Himself through your heartache? How has your heartache been transformed into a platform to glorify God and comfort others?
Terria serves on the LGG encourager and social media teams. She is a single mother of two teenage girls. Her passionate goal is to start a revolution to empower a generation of single women to grab onto God’s truth and cling to it. She loves to talk and loves to listen. She can often be tracked down in noisy hospital hallways listening to people’s stories, and sharing the lessons and love that God has poured out in her life. Despite the chaotic and messy circumstances of Terria’s life, God shows himself strong and loving. The evidence is clear – He loves hard!
