Proverbs 12:17-22 17 Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit. 18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. 20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.21 No ill befalls the righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble. 22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.
SOAP – Proverbs 12:22
Our speech reveals what is in our hearts. Lying is a destructive use of speech considered an abomination to the Lord. As the culture declines, lying and deceit have become more common and accepted. When we disregard, exaggerate, or bend the truth, we dishonor God who is the Truth.
In what circumstances are you tempted to exaggerate, stretch, or disregard the truth? One lie damages three people – the one who tells the lie, the one who hears the lie, and the one who is the subject of the lie. Believers must remember that because we serve the One who is the Truth, we honor Him by always telling the truth.
Father God, I thank You for Your grace and mercy. Empower me to become impeccable in my speech and to tell the truth especially when it seems easier to lie. Help me to live out Your truth by speaking honestly with everyone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
