Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-17; Matthew 1:1-17

SOAP: 2 Samuel 7:16

“Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.”

Kingdoms and empires, kings and rulers; one by one they are built up for a time, and then they are torn down. No kingdom lasts forever, except for one. God made a promise to King David that his kingdom would see no end. Maybe David thought it was because his royal line would go on forever, but we now know it is because Jesus sits on David’s throne.

Jesus is a descendant of David and therefore a rightful heir to David’s throne. The throne Jesus occupies cannot be overthrown and His kingdom cannot be torn down. Those who belong to Jesus also belong to a kingdom that is ruled with justice, love, generosity, grace, and power. How thankful we should be that we belong to such a kingdom and such a king.

Lord, You are the King of Kings and ruler of all, but only those who believe in You will be able to be a part of Your kingdom. Help us to love who You are, obey You, and give us a passion to tell others about You and Your kingdom.
