“Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he himself believed along with his entire household. Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee.” –John 4:53–54
This man came to Jesus like many of us do: with a need.
This man recognized the power of Jesus and thought if he could get Jesus to come with him, his son would be healed. Facing a heartbreaking situation, this was a last-ditch effort. The problem was, when the man asked Jesus to come, Jesus answered, “Go . . . “
Have you ever cried out to Jesus like this father, desperate for God to work and fairly certain how He should? Have you ever prayed specifically, only to be disappointed that God didn’t do what you were confident He should do?
Jesus didn’t do what the man asked in the way the man asked Him to do it. However, instead of continuing to plead with Jesus, this desperate man believed and obeyed.
“The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home.” –John 4:50
God will not always answer in the way we think He should or in the timeframe we want, but we can trust His commands. He is sovereign and faithful and good. Scripture tells us that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose (see Romans 8:28).
Jesus offers us an invitation to trust Him, like He did with the man in this story. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him. Then he went on his way and returned home.
The man believed and departed. In faith, he went.
Will we believe what God says? Will we believe the word Jesus speaks to us and get up and go? Will our faith result in action?
We may, at times, feel afraid and uncertain, but we always have a choice: to believe God or not. Believe what God says and take the next step with Him. Then watch what God does as He increases your faith and your joy as you trust in Him and bring glory to Him.
