I will never forget the day doctors told me and my husband we would not be able to have children.

That devastating message left me questioning God’s goodness and His endless love. Looking back, I am deeply moved by what I was able to learn about God’s unfailing love during that season. Once I could see beyond my pain and grief, I was able to see His perfect plan. His love is a love that never runs dry. Today, three precious children I was told I’d never have dance around my feet. I can give thanks to the Lord, confident that His loyal love endures forever.

Germany, the country I call home, has overcome the devastating effects of two world wars in the past century. Today, Germany has great influence as the world’s fourth-largest economy with a very high standard of living. Often these blessings are taken for granted, the past hardship and suffering quickly forgotten. Times of peace are attributed to chance or to one’s own achievements.

Due to an abundance of wealth, status, and luxury, this small country is failing to see its desire and need for God’s goodness and enduring love.

Everyone has a story to tell about God’s goodness. For some, the experience may be dramatic or intense, like the writer of Psalm 136 who recounted how God delivered His people form captivity and conquered His enemies. Others, like me, experience God’s endless love in their personal lives again and again. Remembering who God is and what He has done brings out praise and thanksgiving that glorifies Him.

God’s goodness is the very first and most important reason to be thankful. Give thanks to the Lord, not only because He does good, but because He is good. Not only because He is merciful, but because His mercy endures forever.
