“The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and see my suffering; my young women and my young men have gone into captivity. – Lamentations 1:18

Like any loving father, God wanted to bless His children out of His abundance. Unfortunately, Israel did not follow in God’s footsteps and chose to hoard God’s material blessings for themselves. Instead of being thankful to God for all they were given and pass the blessings they received on to others, Israel chose to use their blessings in ungodly ways and turn to false gods.

Paul warns against the same sin in Galatians 5:13: “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh.” Sometimes, as Christians, we take the liberty and blessing God gives and use them in ungodly ways.

Lamentations reminds us what happened to the people of Israel: they went into captivity. The young women and men from Israel had to pay the price of the people´s rebellion toward God. We must never forget that sin has consequences. It´s true that God forgives our sin completely when we repent. But He doesn´t take away the consequences of our sinful behavior.

Dear God, I don´t want to live with unconfessed sin in my life. I know sin has consequences. Please, help me, after confessing my sin to You, deal with the consequences of that sin. Help me live as a wise woman. Amen.
